What is the purpose of art?

Is it to please our senses? Reinsure, flatter or excite us? To make us dream, give us access to a world, a life beyond our everyday reality?

What is the drive for chosen individuals to put their energy – sometimes their entire life – into artistic creation? Is it simply a need to express and translate emotions? To tell a story, propose a statement, set a testimony? Is it a human aspiration to inject life into objects?

Is art a response to our spiritual quest?

How come artistic creation dates back to the origin of humanity? That there is virtually no civilization that has not produced its own art – sometimes as a tool of power and prestige, sometimes as an instrument of contestation or reform?

How can art represent such a space of liberty – maybe the ultimate space of liberty – and yet consistently be driven by so many norms? And how can it incorporate at the same time so much beauty and so much violence?

Isn’t piece of art, depending on when and how we look at it, a reflection on all the above – sometimes an answer, sometimes a question?

And how do we qualify achievement in art? Is it when form and substance, shape and soul, become coherent? When humanity meets universality? Or it is simply when this hard to explain flow grabs us, a particular emotion?

Kuriosa obviously cannot claim to answer those far-reaching interrogations. It nevertheless seeks to showcase this wonderful diversity.

Kuriosa is the formal and numeric continuation of over two decades devoted to art - search and research as well as the acquisition, exchange and sale of artworks - on all continents. Its founders bring complimentary backgrounds and looks.

The spirit of collecting, travels, decoration, arrangements, harmonies and oppositions - inherited from a family tradition, on the one hand. Artistic creation, the anthropology of art, techniques, emotions and intentions, on the other hand.
