Hasui Kawase Print, Pond at Shiba Benten Temple, Japan
Hasui Kawase — Showa Era
Print by Hasui Kawase (1883-1957). A Japanese artist, he is the best-known representative of Shin-hanga, an early 20th-century movement that revitalized traditional woodblock printing (ukiyo-e), seeking to reconcile classical techniques with modern sensibilities, often influenced by photography and cultural exchanges with the West. The print shown here is titled “Pond at Shiba Benten,” a pond located in the Shiba district of Tokyo (associated with Benten-dō Temple, dedicated to the goddess Benzaiten). The original work dates from 1929. The print presented here is a later edition, made from blocks recut in the 1930s.
Dimensions (oban yoko-e): approximately 39 cm x 26 cm.
Very good condition.
