Miniature Mask, Ojime, Wood, Japan, Edo Period

Toshu (attr.) — Late Edo - early Meiji

A small wooden “ojime” bead in the form of a mask. Ojime are small, carved beads that were part of a set comprising an inrō (case), a cord, and a netsuke (toggle). Used to secure the cord, they were often carved with great refinement. Ojime depicting miniature masks were particularly prized, drawing inspiration from various traditions such as Noh and Kyōgen theater or folklore.

The piece presented here is made of hardwood with a dark patina. While it depicts a smiling old man—a common theatrical figure—it incorporates fantastical elements that depart from classical models, such as the four spiral-shaped ornamental protrusions. It is more evocative of a supernatural face or an archaic-style mask (such as Bugaku or Gikaku types)—resembling Ryūjin (the Dragon King) or a highly stylized interpretation of a Shishiguchi (protective lion) mask. The carving is of exceptional quality, featuring fine striations within the wood indicative of traditional tool use. The central bridge (the channel through which the cord passes) shows an old repair made with a black material—likely resin, lacquer, or an early type of putty. These characteristics and the patina attest to the work of a master carver from an earlier period (Edo or early Meiji era). It bears no signature; this was likely lost or covered over during the repair of the bridge. Stylistic similarities to another mask in the collection (26-020) suggest they originated from the same master, or workshop.

Dimensions: 4 x 3 cm— exceptionally large for an ojime.

Good condition; old repair to the central bridge.
