Mask of Celebration, Nepal
Unknown artist — late 19th - early 20th century
Spectacular celebration mask, from Nepal, probably from the Kathmandu valley. Masks from Nepal were used mainly for festive purposes, though of highly symbolistic value. Materials are chosen for their natural characteristics - here a wooden root, knobby, veined and granular - associating matter with a spirit, in the pure shamanic tradition. End of 19th / early 20th c.
