Set of Two Small Black Lacquer Boxes with Floral and Plant Motifs in Maki-e, Japan, Kyoto, Meiji period

This set consists of two black lacquer boxes with gold motifs. The boxes are made of wood covered with black lacquer (urushi), and the decoration technique used is maki-e (which consists of applying very fine metallic powders, primarily gold or silver, to the still-wet lacquer motifs, which are then polished). The floral work features a relief created using a specific technique (Takamaki-e) to give volume. The fine workmanship confirms an early origin, dating to the Meiji period, and a probable provenance from Kyoto.

The first box is cylindrical (8.5 x 8.5 cm), decorated in gilded maki-e with a chrysanthemum (kiku) and vegetal scrolls. The chrysanthemum motif is more elaborate (individualized petals, leaf veins, and carefully drawn outlines). It has an ornate lid, whose stylized motifs flow harmoniously into the body of the box, and a seam runs along the top and bottom. Its exact function is difficult to determine; it could have been a small storage box, perhaps intended for precious objects or for use related to tea. It is in very good overall condition (minor losses to the top layer of lacquer on the inside).

The second box is rectangular (8.5 x 3.5 cm), decorated in gilt maki-e with a stylized vine and gourd (hyōtan) motif, complete with leaves and tendrils. This is a classic Japanese motif, associated with longevity and prosperity, featuring large leaves and a rounded fruit. The decoration is executed in the same style as that of the round box: a black background, gilded scrolls, and plant motifs applied in relief or gilt. Its small size and unusual shape suggest a specific, unidentified use (perhaps a case). Although they exhibit a clear decorative coherence (the objects belong to a set), the work on the small box appears more elaborate, with a raised maki-e motif, perhaps combined with inlays or appliqués. It is in very good overall condition (with some loss to the top layer of lacquer on the inside).
