Chokwe Mwana Pwo Mask, DRC / Angola
Unknown artist — 1920-1950
Small ceremonial mask with headdress. It comes from the Chokwe tribe, a significant ethnic group found in the DRC, Angola, and Zambia. Known for their fine sculpture, they produced both court and ceremonial objects, including masks. The example shown is of the “Mwana Pwo” (young girl) type, often interpreted as a female ancestor or the embodiment of feminine qualities valued in Chokwe society. It features a delicate face with slit eyes, a wide mouth with visible teeth, and scarification on the forehead (cross) and cheeks. Covered with a crusty red patina, the headdress is made of oiled fabric. A piece of great expressiveness.
Dimensions ca. 18 cm x 14 cm x 20 cm
Very good condition
