Glass Dish on an Ebony Base featuring a Schnauzer and an Elephant, France
Unknown artist — 1930-40
A small, octagonal cut-glass dish featuring an acid-etched Schnauzer. It rests on a beveled Macassar ebony base adorned with a small, stylized Art Deco-style elephant—crafted from an ivory-like material (such as Bakelite, tagua nut, resin, or bone)—and four small pillars that support the dish. This is a true curiosity piece made from fine materials and featuring exquisite details; however, neither its exact function (jewelry dish? ashtray?) nor the rather unusual pairing of an elephant and a rarely represented dog breed has been clearly identified. It may well be a unique, custom-made creation commissioned by a Schnauzer owner (with the elephant perhaps referencing a specific event), a family that bred the breed, or a kennel club.
Dimensions: approximately 12 cm x 8 cm x 4 cm
Very good condition
