Medal of the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Japan

Unknown artist — Meiji Era

Breast Star of the Order of the Sacred Treasure. This medal is one of Japan's highest honors. It was established in 1888 by Emperor Meiji to reward distinguished service to the state and society. The Order takes its name from the "sacred treasures" of Japanese imperial tradition: the mirror, the sword, and the jewel, which symbolize imperial authority. Its insignia depicts enameled rays evoking these sacred symbols. The Order has eight grades. The example shown here is the Grand Cross Star, 1st Class. It is made of gilt silver and enameled overlays, with a thin vertical pin and two lateral hooks on the reverse, bearing Japanese inscriptions.

Dimensions: 74 mm x 74 mm.
